Multicultural Literature



I picked the book I love Saturdays y domingos by Alma Flor Ada because it offers a window into the lives of many children in Southwest Florida. This book follows a little girl as she spends time with both sets of grandparents. She spends her Saturdays with her American grandparents and Sundays with her Spanish grandparents. The author explains Saturdays in English and Sundays with Spanish phrases. I think that this book would be vital for students who are Spanish coming to the U.S. so that they can see how the two cultures can be integrated. Also, I think that it can help students feel comfortable when they have a culturally diverse family as this one is because some children can feel self-conscious about differences from their peers!

  1. This book is great for children who want to know more about their own families and ethnic backgrounds. This book could be an amazing book in the classroom; many families are from different ethnic backgrounds and reading a book where it incorporates English and Spanish will validate both heritages. I agree, this book can help students feel at ease around other peers and less conscious about their differences. Students will enjoy this book because of its illustrations and the narrator takes us through a mini journey of two cultures.

  2. I have seen this book around, but never really looked into it! Now that I have read your description it is one that I believe would be a great tool in the classroom! I think it is so neat that in the book they have the two languages integrated. This is a great way to get ELL students involved in reading out loud! It is also a great way to bring the classroom together as a community!
